How to Get an EPP / Auth Code (General Steps) Print

  • 0

An EPP/Auth Code (also called a Transfer Code or Authorization Code) is required when transferring a domain name from one registrar to another. This guide explains how to obtain the EPP/Auth code from most registrars.

What Is an EPP / Auth Code?

  • A unique security code assigned to your domain

  • Confirms domain ownership

  • Required for most domain transfers such as:

    • .com

    • .org

    • .net

    • .info

    • New gTLDs

???? Think of it as a password for transferring your domain.

General Steps to Get an EPP / Auth Code

Step 1: Log in to Your Current Domain Registrar

  • Visit your domain registrar’s website

  • Log in to your client account

Step 2: Go to Domain Management

  • Click My Domains, Domain Manager, or Domain List

  • Select the domain you want to transfer

Step 3: Unlock the Domain

  • Find Registrar Lock or Domain Lock

  • Set it to OFF / Disabled

⚠️ Most registrars will not show the EPP code while the domain is locked.

Step 4: Disable WHOIS Privacy (If Enabled)

  • Turn off WHOIS Privacy / Domain Privacy

  • This ensures transfer approval emails are delivered

???? This is usually temporary and can be re-enabled later.

Step 5: Request or View the EPP/Auth Code

Look for options like:

  • Get Authorization Code

  • Request EPP Code

  • Transfer Domain

  • Send Auth Code via Email

Click the option and:

  • Copy the code from the screen OR

  • Check your email for the code

Step 6: Save the Code Securely

  • Copy the code exactly as shown

  • Avoid adding spaces before or after

  • Keep it private

Step 7: Start the Domain Transfer

  • Go to your new registrar

  • Enter the domain name

  • Paste the EPP/Auth code when prompted

  • Submit the transfer request

Important Notes

  • Domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or previous transfer

  • Transfers usually add 1 year to domain validity

  • Some ccTLDs (e.g. .co.ke, .co.ug) do not use EPP codes and require manual transfers
